What does Capitola mean?
You may be surprised to learn that the origins of Capitola’s name are somewhat shrouded in mystery, with some details possibly lost to the ages. The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History have a great page dedicated to Capitola’s naming, as well as a full essay discussing the possible roots of its name.
How do you get to Capitola?
Capitola is tucked away between Santa Cruz and Soquel. However with the lack of signs announcing you have entered Capitola it can be hard to tell if you’re currently in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Soquel, or Aptos if you don’t know the area very well.
The good news is Capitola is pretty hard to miss, and with only one highway cutting through Capitola there are really only two directions you could be coming from:
Driving South
coming from San Jose, San Francisco, etc.
- Use your favorite navigation app to get to Highway 17 (CA-17 S)
- Take CA-17 S past Santa Cruz. You’ll know you’re passing Santa Cruz when you hit ‘The Fishhook’: the sharp turn existing to Highway 1 (CA-1 S)
- Take CA-1 S until the Bay Ave. / Porter St. exist (Exist 437). Exit off CA-1 and take a right onto Bay Ave.
- Continue on Bay Ave for approximately 1 mile. You will pass a grocery store and Dairy Queen before coming to a four-way stop.
- Turn right at the four-way stop onto Capitola Ave. You will come to several stop signs as you drive down into the Village.
- Find a parking spot and let the adventure begin!
